DuClaw Brewing Company, a Baltimore brewery, was launching a limited edition Oat Wine Ale to sell throughout the east coast during the fall and into the winter. They gave this new beer the name Obol, based on Greek mythology. They needed a design to tell the story of Charon's Obol, a ferryman who carries souls of the living to the world of the dead, and an Obol is the coin they must pay for passage.
The logo was inspired by the story of Obol as well as the flavor notes of the beer. The label was printed on metallized paper with a dull coating over top to create the appearance of a foil stamp without the high cost of a custom plate.
